Flin Flon Travel Guide
Welcome to Flin Flon!
Straddling the rugged border between Manitoba and Saskatchewan, the city of Flin Flon was founded in 1927 by Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting. The name is derived from a character called Muddock Josiah Flintabbatey Flonatin in the science fiction novel, The Sunless City by J. E. Preston, who took a submarine journey into a bottomless lake, and discovered an underground world after passing through a hole lined with gold. A vein of almost pure copper was discovered in the area and reminded a prospector of the novel, so he named the site Flin Flon's Mine. As the city grew, the name was adopted and in 1962 cartoonist Al Capp designed the Statue of Josiah Flintabbatey Flonatin, located off Highway 10.The Flin Flon Station Museum showcases an extensive collection of industrial and pioneer artifacts that emphasize the city's cultural heritage, while a stroll down Flinty's Boardwalk is a great way to absorb the city's ambiance and view the cliff-encircled Ross Lake. Located south of Flin Flon, Baker's Narrows Provincial Park is situated on 145 ha (358 acres) of Precambrian Borealis forest. On the shores of Lake Athapapaskow there is a beach with excellent swimming and fishing, hiking trails and a back country area. A lookout tower provides staggering views of the entire park's grounds. Fishing enthusiasts won't want to miss the annual Flin Flon Trout Festival, a celebrated local event. This major fishing derby attracts champions from all over the province every June.Tourist Attractions
